Hi there!
I’m Jolie Hoang, a Ph.D. Neuroscience Candidate at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. I explore our health through research, build connections in the communities I serve, and recharge through adventures around the world.
Growing up in Hà Nội, Việt Nam in a family of healers, I’m inspired to follow in my parents’ footsteps, helping people overcome disease and regain control over their lives. Witnessing health disparities in marginalized communities instilled in me a deep sense of purpose to serve those born into disadvantaged circumstances. At fourteen, I moved to the U.S., determined to learn how to make a difference. During my college years, I was mentored by the good people and amazing scientists, Dr. Paulo Lizano and Dr. Matcheri Keshavan. They taught me how to think critically and work rigorously like a scientist and inspired me to become someone not only seek knowledge but also produce it. I also feel immense gratitude to work with Dr. Lawrence Yang and Dr. Ragy Girgis during my Master’s year at Columbia University, where I delved into global mental health projects focused on understudied areas. You can read more about my research here.
Currently, for my Ph.D., I’m exploring the intersection of AI, genetics, and neuroscience under the guidance of Dr. Alex Charney and Dr. Noam Beckmann. My work focuses on applying machine learning techniques to blood-brain multi-omics data and neuroimaging from the Living Brain Project. Through my research, I aim to unravel the complexities of brain function and disease mechanisms, paving the way for more personalized treatments in neurological disorders. Outside the lab, I love exploring the flavors of NYC with my friends, partner, and our cat Solo.
Beyond my academic pursuits, I enjoy engaging in community projects, drawing on my experiences with the Samaritans Crisis Hotline, TEDx Talks, Vital, and other organizations. My purpose is to create meaningful, lasting change by using my research and advocacy to support and uplift marginalized communities. It all starts with genuine care.
Lastly, traveling has been a big passion of mine, as it allows me to immerse myself in diverse cultures and continually reminds me of how much there is to learn about the world. Each journey introduces me to the rich histories and unique identities of new places, expanding my understanding of the world and its many ways of life beyond my own. From solo backpacking trips across Southeast Asia to family adventures in Patagonia, Puerto Rico, Switzerland, France, Italy, and across 30 states of the U.S., each journey has shaped my perspective and deepened my connection to the world. Check out my inspiration here.
I’m always curious about what the world can become and excited to continue exploring and contributing to its future. Ultimately, I want to experience life to its fullest, leverage technologies to improve health, and have fun with the people I love.
